1. Signaler Badge (Provisional / Proficiency)

Designed for junior scouts and guides entering the world of field communications.

  • Core Focus: Mastery of foundational visual and audible signaling methods.

  • RSSL Course Content:

    • The Morse Code System: Learning the alphabet, numerals, and structural prosigns (CQ, SOS, AR, K) at a foundational speed of 5 words per minute (WPM).

    • Semaphore Mastery: Full proficiency in flag positioning, sending, and receiving messages accurately across visual distances.

    • Field Signalling Gear: Proper deployment of signaling flags, heliographs (sun mirrors), and field lamps for night operations.

    • Message Handling: Formatting official messages using standard prefixes, time checks, and text grids to ensure error-free transmission.

  • Practical Assessment: Send and receive a 30-word message via Morse code lamp and Semaphore flags over a distance of at least 100 meters with 90% accuracy.

2. Leading Signaler Badge (Advanced)

For senior scouts and guides looking to lead communication teams during rallies, camporees, or district events.

  • Core Focus: Advanced cryptographic standards, speed signaling, and network management.

  • RSSL Course Content:

    • High-Speed Morse Code: Advancing auditory Morse code proficiency to a minimum of 8–10 WPM.

    • Phonetic Alphabet Integration: Mastery of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Phonetic Alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie...) for crisp voice communications over noisy channels.

    • Station Logs & Record Keeping: How to maintain a legally compliant radio station logbook, tracking signal reports using the R-S-T system.

    • Emergency Infrastructure: Coordinating a signaling network using multiple visual stations to relay messages across terrains where electronic communication has failed.

  • Practical Assessment: Act as the "Station Master" to successfully coordinate a multi-point relay network during an active RSSL or scouting field exercise.

3. Wireless Man Badge

The direct bridge into the world of Amateur Radio. This course prepares participants for modern radio operations and the Novice Class Amateur Radio Examination.

  • Core Focus: Operating transceiver hardware, frequency etiquette, and basic electronic theory.

  • RSSL Course Content:

    • How Radio Waves Work: Understanding frequencies, wavelengths, High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and how ionospheric layers affect signal propagation.

    • Amateur Radio Station Operation: Hands-on training with VHF/UHF handheld transceivers (walkie-talkies) and HF base stations.

    • International Call Signs & Prefixes: Understanding Sri Lanka’s 4S7 prefix ecosystem and how to identify foreign stations.

    • Disaster Communication Protocols: Understanding the role of the RSSL in national disaster mitigation and how to handle priority emergency traffic.

  • Practical Assessment: Conduct a series of live, supervised two-way voice contacts (QSOs) on the local RSSL VHF repeater network, demonstrating flawless operational etiquette.

4. Radio Mechanic Badge

For the builders and tinkerers. This path focuses on the hardware, circuitry, troubleshooting, and safety protocols behind the radio.

  • Core Focus: Electronics workbench skills, antenna fabrication, and hardware diagnostics.

  • RSSL Course Content:

    • Electronic Component Fundamentals: Deep dive into resistors, capacitors, inductors, transistors, and integrated circuits—including reading schematic diagrams.

    • The Soldering Workbench: Safe tool handling, PCB construction, and soldering techniques to create durable, field-ready electronic circuits.

    • Antenna Building (Homebrewing): Designing and cutting a functional VHF Dipole or Slim-Jim antenna out of spare wire and measuring its efficiency using an SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) meter.

    • Electrical Safety & Grounding: Crucial safety protocols for high-voltage power supplies, lightning protection systems, and RF grounding in field camps.

  • Practical Assessment: Successfully assemble a functional electronic kit (such as a simple buzzer or audio amplifier) from raw components and fabricate a field-deployable VHF antenna.
